Juneteenth is the oldest national celebration of the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. The West Broad Market & Garden worked with the community to create one of Athens’ first celebrations of Juneteenth starting in 2012. Since then, awareness of the significance of Juneteenth and of Jubilee Day has grown throughout Athens, resulting in a number of important community celebrations that create opportunities for Athenians to come together. This has been an important tenet of the work of the West Broad Market & Garden to bring people together to support positive growth for our community – through health, wellness, economic opportunity, and civic engagement.

The West Broad Farmers Market’s Juneteenth Celebration is a day of reflection, but also a day to celebrate African American freedom, achievement, and culture! Join us for an exciting lineup of activities, music, and family fun at the 2023 Juneteenth Celebration!
This event will also feature the Athens Red Velvet Cake Throwdown! Amateur bakers are invited to the West Broad Farmers Market to compete by bringing the best red velvet cake in Athens, GA. After evaluations from three local celebrity judges, the winner will receive a Farmers Market Tote filled with an item from each WBFM vendor.

Our talented West Broad vendors will be on-site with fresh fruits and veggies, delicious local fare, local meat, eggs, and dairy, fresh-cut flowers, potted plants, artwork, jewelry, bath, and body products, and so much more!
