Community Agriculture

The Community Agriculture Program strives to support Athens Land Trust’s commitment to neighborhood revitalization by developing a sustainable local food system in some of Athens’ most food insecure communities, strengthening the local economy and building unity and wellness at the community level.

Our Mission

To promote sustainable agriculture

To increase access to healthy food

To support economic and entrepreneurial opportunities for underserved youth and adults

Our Program Areas

Community Garden Network

The CGN is a partnership between organizations that grow and promote school and community garden projects. The gardens in our network are increasing access to healthy food, teaching people about sustainable agriculture, and donating food to our community through Meals on Wheels, soup kitchens, and food pantries.

Vendor Development

The West Broad Farmers Market provides retail space for underserved farmers and small business owners. Vendor development classes, held in our office, provide educational support for those just getting started in their businesses.

Young Urban Farmers

In partnership with Clarke County School District, ALT established the Young Urban Farmer (YUF) program in order to provide underserved high school students with sustainable agriculture education, hands-on work experience, and leadership development. Students work 12 hours weekly at the West Broad Market Garden, develop business plans for sustainable agriculture-based businesses, and sell their products at market booths.

Farmer Outreach

This program is a collaborative effort with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to conduct outreach and educational activities for underserved groups in Northeast Georgia. The goal of the program is to support and provide resources for marginalized farmers and raise awareness of NRCS programs.
